The Olympic Games are not just about competing for medals, but has also showed about the spirit of sportsmanship, respect each other, mutual support, and fair play. In fact, the United Nations General Assembly in July 2024 has selected May 19 each year as World Fair Play Day.
Today, we would like to highlight some important events that demonstrate fair play and sportsmanship in the Olympic Games.
In the event of the Paris Olympic Games 2024, Canadian gymnast Ellie Black won the Fair Play Award after she helped cheer up French gymnast Mélanie de Jesus dos Santos, who had suffered a setback.
At the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, the women’s finalists helped each other out without any hesitation. In fact, they helped lift Japanese female athlete Misugu Okamoto to put onto their shoulders after she slipped and collapsed near the end.
At the 2016 Rio Olympics, New Zealand runner Nikki Hamblin stopped halfway to help a female athlete Abbey D'Agostino after the two collided during the 5,000m race. The two helped each other all the way to the final.
